Tour the township by bicycle
South Africa is a fantastic country, and a land of many contrasts. While most visitors spot the Big Five, sip superb sparkling wine and dine at gourmet restaurants, very few get to experience what life is like for many South Africans who reside in poverty.
Township tours are a new and unique way to explore the informal settlements where many locals live, but most of these occur in a stuffy vehicle, somewhat removed from life on the streets. Our Township by Bike tour allows guests to really savour the sights and sounds of Masiphumelele township, just outside Cape Town, from the back of a bike!
With a local guide accompanying us, we take guests around this informal settlement, meeting the inhabitants and getting to see a side of the country that escapes most tourist brochures. We play with the kids at a community-run preschool, stop off at the library and get to see some authentic singing and dancing by a sangoma (traditional healer)! We can even sample traditional cuisine of pap and wors (maize meal and sausage) if guests would like, and enjoy a beer at a local shebeen (pub) where we mingle with the locals.
Not only is this Eco-Active adventure good for the environment, it also contributes to this impoverished community in a sustainable way, providing employment and bridging divides.
