Victoria Falls by Bike

2010-07-27

It's one of the seven natural wonders of the world, it's one of southern Africa's most revered attractions, it's a wildlife paradise - and now you can explore it by bike! Victoria Falls really is something special.

It stands head and shoulders above Niagara and Iguacu in our opinion, with far much more to offer any visitor. Not only do the Falls form the largest falling curtain of water in the world when in full flood, but the whole area is teeming with wild animals and indigenous lush rainforest. Warthogs wander through town at will, monkeys will climb into your rooms and elephants wreak all sorts of havoc around town!

Having scouted a number of Eco-Active routes in Cape Town, Durban and across South Africa, we decided it was time to take our product further north. Victoria Falls is the perfect destination, an adventure haven with activities like bungee jumping, white water rafting, helicopter flights and much more! But riding around the bush on a bike, alongside the serene Zambezi, past a plethora of wild animals, is something that cannot be beaten - imagine a better way to travel if you will!

Our Victoria Falls Cycle takes place at either sunrise or sunset, and includes all bikes and equipment, with an expert guide to accompany you every pedal of the way! We meet at the historic Victoria Falls Hotel, an elegant and charming colonial hotel which opened in 1904 and has been an insitution ever since! We start here with High Tea, an indulgent affair.

We begin by exploring the Chinotimba Township, taking a stroll through the lively market, bargaining for fresh fruit and vegetables or locally produced honey. We even offer the option of dinner or lunch at our guide, Victor Sibanda's house, a once in a lifetime experience! We visit a local school, soccer stadium and clinic, getting a sense of the way your average Zimbabwean lives, not something most tourists are exposed to.

After this cultural tour, we enter the bush heading onto Zambezi Drive, keeping an eye out for elephant, buffalo, impala, warthog, monkeys, baboons and an array of birdlife! This is an invigorating ride, and getting within touching distance of Africa's wild beasts is something that will live long in the memory. Of course, we stop a lot, this is a leisure activity so breaking alongside the Zambezi as it eases gently downstream seems like a good idea and the perfect place for a refreshment. And no visit would be complete without a foray to the Falls, so we quickly enter Zambia and pose for photos on the historic Railway Bridge. Oh, and did we mention that the views are sensational? Think rainbow-covered Falls serenaded in the last rays of sun!

And no Bike & Saddle cycle would be complete without the signature gourmet picnic afterwards. We saunter back to the Victoria Falls Hotel for an assortment of canapes and sparkling wine, toasting the sunset in style. So if you are coming to Vic Falls and looking to do something out of the ordinairy, then join for us for the ride of your life!
