Backsberg Estate Cellars, set at the foot of the Simonsberg Mountain, offers a fascinating and commendable blend of history and innovation. The property was purchased by CL Back, an immigrant from Lithuania, in 1916. Over the years farming activities have shifted from fruit, vineyards, grain and livestock, to a small-scale fruit farm and predominantly a wine farm by 1970.
Second generation owner, Sydney Back, joined the farm in 1936, third generation owner, Michael Back, in 1976, and fourth generation, Simon Back, in 2008. Over the years the estate has grown to its present size of almost 300 hectares through the selective addition of land in the area. Today, Backsberg enjoys international acclaim as one of the Top 100 Wineries in the world. In addition, its Carbon Neutral status since 2006 makes it one of the leading eco-firendly wineries in the area and going 'Eco-Active' with Bike and Saddle compliments a longstanding philosophy.
