Cape Town, Full-Day, Fairest Cape – Peninsula Cycle
We meet at the guests’ accommodation and shuttle up to Signal Hill for a bird’s eye view of the Atlantic Seaboard. From here we descend slowly into Camps Bay and then ride on the route of the iconic Cape Town Cycle Race which has been voted one of the most beautiful bike rides in the world. We have the beautiful Twelve Apostles Mountain Range on the left and the stunning Atlantic Ocean on the right. The route takes us to the historic Hout Bay Harbour and we then make our way up the spectacular Chapman’s Peak mountain pass, where we stop at the top for an absolutely superb photo opportunity overlooking Hout Bay harbour and Sentinel Hill.
We shuttle thereafter down the other side of Chapman’s Peak and to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve which is a must-see on any visit to the Mother City. A towering headland at the end of the peninsula, it is the meeting point of the cold Benguela current and warm Agulhas current as the western and eastern oceans collide in spectacular fashion.
It is the most southwestern point in Africa and abounds with indigenous fynbos (“fine bush”) of the Cape Floral Kingdom, a Natural World Heritage Site that is the smallest, yet most diverse, of the world’s floral kingdoms. We enjoy a guided hike to the old lighthouse at Cape Point which stands head and shoulders above everything else in the reserve. It was completed in 1859 and stands at 238 meters above sea-level on the highest section of the peak. It was so often covered in clouds that a new lighthouse had to be built. The historical building is now used as the centralized monitoring point for all the lighthouses on the coast of South Africa. We return back to the city along the eastern side of the peninsula visiting the African Penguin colony at Boulders Beach for a close-up view of the Jackass penguins. On the way to Cape Town, catch glimpses of historic Kalk Bay, St. James, and Muizenberg and its colourful beach huts and year-round swell of surfers.
We start cycling just north of Lion’s Head, a towering Precambrian rock outcrop, aptly named Signal Hill, with superb views of the City, Robben Island and the azure Atlantic Ocean. Lion’s Head peaks at 669 metres (2,195 ft) above sea level.
Descend from Signal Hill rounding the foot of Lion’s Head, Table Mountain greets you in all her glory. From Kloofnek, taking in spectacular views of the city we our way down the mountainside to the seaside suburbs of Clifton and Camps Bay, a haven for bronzed beachgoers. Onwards along the stunning Atlantic Seaboard, through the village of Bakoven, nestled at the foot of the famous Twelve Apostles Peaks. Our first break at the pristine Oudekraal Nature Reserve.
Next to the trailhead for our Chapman’s Peak ride. Chapman’s Peak Drive hugs the near-vertical face of the mountain from Hout Bay to Noordhoek. This is but one highlight of the day’s cycling, and the panoramic views will stay with you for a long while to come.
Next stop, the famous Cape Point Nature Park. We enjoy a guided hike to the top lighthouse for a change of pace. And a phenomenal 1-hour stroll which showcases the unsurpassed beauty of this hidden gem at the southern tip of Africa. The nature reserve is home to baboons, zebra, eland, bontebok, ostrich and an abundance of bird and plant species, many of them endemic to the Cape Floral Kingdom. We break at the beautiful Dias Beach before continuing for the final leg of the cycle that will see us into Simons Town, South Africa’s current and historic naval base.
