7 Day Trip | Cape Cycle Safari
This seven day journey explores two of the Western Cape's unique fauna and flora kingdoms, the semi-arid Klein Karoo and the spectacular beauty of the grain basket (Heaven & Earth country) to the eastern coastal plains of the Western Cape. The Gems of the Cape Coastal region.
We depart Cape Town around 8am (or shortly after breakfast) and travel along the N1 through the Cape Winelands to the beautiful area of Montague and the start of the famous R62 that takes us through the beautiful area and mountains of the Klein Karoo. Our destination, Sanbona Nature and Game Reserve, the Western Cape’s premier wildlife destination.
The sheer expanse and stark beauty of Sanbona gives one a real sense of humbleness, and a temporary release of the daily stresses of everyday living. Here you can become one with nature and we leave you in the very capable hands of the staff at Tilney Manor while you settle in. After a superb gourmet lunch and the pre-requisite application of sun cream, you will go on your first game experience of the tour. In the evening, after a magnificent dinner, you will be rewarded with the beautiful Karoo night skies and magnificent star gazing.
An early morning wake-up call and after tea, coffee and biscuits it’s back out there to try find Africa’s Big 5 mammals. After the sunrise game drive you will return to breakfast. Today you'll be walking among the plains animals with the guidance of a ranger, taking in the breathtaking beauty of the indigenous fauna and flora, discovering isolated vistas that reveal the beauty of Sanbona Wildlife Reserve. After a rewarding lunch you have the rest of the day to relax, enjoy the spa treatments on offer and enjoy the luxury of the accommodations. During the afternoon you will be served high tea and then it is out to find the animals that have been hiding away from you on another sunset game drive. A full day on safari is rounded off by a gourmet dinner.
Another early morning game drive and then breakfast. After breakfast we check out and the bike and Saddle team will be there to collect you. Once we depart the Sanbona reserve we are on the bikes and we will cycle through this amazing area of wilderness and magnificent mountains over a spectacular dirt pass making our way to our new home for the next two nights, the delightful and charming African Game Lodge. We cap off a spectacular day with a hearty, warm and welcoming dinner with all the proud hospitality that the Karoo offers.
In a pristine valley surrounded by the spectacular Langeberg Mountains, lies African Game Lodge, part of a conservation project dedicated to Wildlife Rehabilitation, Awareness and preserving Bio-diversity. Today we are able to cycle, and walk, with a host of animals both big and small. The reserve has a wealth of bird-life and bio-diversity, offering guests the opportunity to experience the varied yet specialised eco-systems of the Little Karoo. African Game Lodge is a private conservation area outside Montagu in the Little Karoo, Western Cape dedicated to preserving the rich biodiversity of the area and we are lucky enough to be able to experience this both on foot and on bicycle.
After breakfast our cycle safari continues we depart this beautiful area and make our way to some hidden gems along the R62. We cycle the beautiful Tradouw Pass down to the Overberg region and make our way over the Akkidiesberg Pass down to beautiful Walker bay. On the Water - By the Sea - Magnificent Mountain Views. Place ourselves between ocean, lagoon and glistening mountains and you will arrive at Mosaic, one of South Africa’s greatest hidden gems on the famous Whale Coast. Mosaic is a private sanctuary where luxury is laced with earthly beauty and heavenly night skies. Centrally located to whale watching, marine tours, shark cage diving and exploring the Overberg Wine Region, Mosaic is the perfect location for nature and activity lovers.
Today is set for exploring the stunningly beautiful area of Walker bay including the town of Hermanus. We have the options of kayaking, cycling, a walk in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve with majestic views of the bay and even a chance to do a wine tasting or indeed include all of these activities for a truly memorable day in an exquisite peace of paradise. We return to Mosaic for the evening.
After breakfast we will cycle the route from Hermanus to Gordons Bay along arguably one of the most scenic coastal roads in the country. Watch out for wild troops of Baboon, hyrax, antelope, wild horses near Kleinmond and although it is not yet whale season... often dolphins are spotted surfing the waves. Along route there is also the option of visiting a Penguin colony near Betty’s Bay if you do not already have this planned at Boulders, when visiting Cape Point.
This sensational day of cycling is the perfect way to end our safari. Once we have arrived in Gordons Bay we will transfer you to your accommodation in Cape Town bringing an end to our cycle safari but the memories will live on forever.
