Half Day | Imizamo Yethu, The Shantytown Walk
The Shantytown Walk of Hout Bay
We meet at the police station where your guide introduces the community and how they came to IY. From here we meander through the alleys and meet an inspirational young entrepreneur and math coach.
Two families tell us their stories and invite us into their shacks for a glimpse of their daily lives. We hear how families make do if they don’t have running water in their houses and stop at Phillip's Tavern and hear the story of this local bar where young people from many different nationalities socialize.
The next and most joyful stop is at Siyazama Pre School, a safe place for young children to spend their day. They show you their songs and plays. The joy, energy, and happiness of these children brings a big smile to your face! We visit a local community center where you can enjoy a coffee and shop for beautiful hand-made souvenirs. By now you’re hungry and we visit Mama’s Kitchen for a delicious home-cooked lunch of chakalaka, pap, and beef stew. If you like, there is also home-brewed African beer!
After the lunch we walk to Ikhaya Lethemb, an organisation that offers after-school activities for the children of IY. Our walk ends at the police station and now you see the township with different eyes: it's a place where people are joyful and friendly and have graciously invited you into their homes. Life isn't easy but the community is building a future!
