5 Day Trip | Midlands Meander Cycle - Drakensberg
Day 1 - Arrival & Fordoun
Riders will meet at Fordoun, one of the Midlands best kept hospitality secrets, in the afternoon. Fordoun is located about 4km’s from Nottingham Road (4.5 hours by car from Johannesburg, 2.5 hour from Durban).
You will be met by Steuart Pennington and John Symons, our Midlands Bike and Saddle representatives for a de-briefing and a short ride if time permits, after which dinner will be served and a talk on the history of the area and the hotel in particular will be given by the hotel owner. International riders can be transported from Durban to Fordoun.
Day 2 - The Capture Site, Caversham Mill & Fordoun Spa
A reasonably early morning start will have the riders on their way
via Mount West to Curry’s Post and then onto the Nelson Mandela Capture
Site located just north of Howick. Right there in 1962 Nelson Mandela
was captured, tried and imprisoned for 27 years and South Africa’s
history changed forever.
Our party will have lunch and then enjoy a guided tour through the
Nelson Mandela exhibition (on site) with a fascinating talk on his life
with the themes of Character, Comrade, Leader, Prisoner, Negotiator, Statesman. After which the riders will travel via Caversham Mill to Fordoun and the opportunity to indulge in what is arguably Southern Africa's best spa experience.
Fordoun Spa boasts a team of experts that include skilled masseurs, Reiki and Bio-energy specialists, a traditional African Healer and highly trained aestheticians.
The spa features internationally acclaimed treatments such as the rasul, (a Turkish steam and clay treatment room), a saline Floatation pool, heated swimming pool, a gymnasium, sauna, steam room, vichy shower, hydrotherapy room, and a couples’ treatment suite with hydrotherapy bath.
Day 3 - Fort Nottingham and Cleopatras
After a scrumptous breakfast we ride out to Fort Nottingham which has
a fascinating history going way back to the hunting of the Bushman, the
1873 Langalibalele Rebellion (where Major Durnford of Isandlwana fame
permanently injured his arm) and the Boer War. After a picnic lunch, the afternoon ride, via Loteni Reserve, will take us to Cleopatras, a 5 star mountain country lodge nestled amongst the mighty Drakensberg mountains, and more specifically, the Kamberg.
After check-in and a rest, a walk in the surrounding forest, we are treated to a classic rich, gourmet and well deserved dinner, including a port and chocolate tasting.
Day 4 - Giant's Castle, Highmoor & Crane Foundation Reserve
Mornings at Cleopatras are special and we encourage you to rise early for the sunrise and to soak in the splendours of your surroundings before sitting down for breakfast. Be sure to indulge as today's ride will require lots of energy!
The ride begins to the north from Cleopatra’s through the Crane Foundation Reserve. After a few km’s on district road tar we ride mostly on quiet, country, gravel roads with some single track. Back-up vehicles will be on hand with refreshments throughout the tour. This ride will take us through the Crane Reserve under the imposing escarpment of the central Drakensburg with the towering Giants Castle ever present throughout the day. A strenuous 6km pull through fold mountain valley scenery will bring the party to the KZN reserve of Highmoor Lake for a late picnic lunch after which we will return to Cleopatra’s. The late afternoon for fishing enthusiasts could mean an attempt to engage the evening rise. After a special dinner a talk on South Africa’s remarkable story of transition since 1994 will be presented.
Day 5 - Departure
Sadly our journey comes to an end this morning; for those who wish to have a last cycle before breakfast, we indulge and then after a final breakfast with our hosts at Cleopatras, we shuttle back to Nottinham Road for the shuttle that will take you on to Durban or Johannesburg airport.
