The Milner Park is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Braamfontein, and Kitchener’s Carvery Bar on the ground floor is officially recognized as the second oldest bar in Johannesburg. It shares with Great Dane, quickly becoming one of the city's coolest hang-outs, providing hotdogs and music all night long.
From here we cycle across the iconic Nelson Mandela Bridge into the heart of Newtown, Jozie's core cultural precinct. The precinct, contains the internationally famous Market Theatre, Museum Africa and numerous dance and music venues, all straddling the historic Mary Fitzgerald Square.
From the north-eastern to the north-western quadrants of Newtown, Carr Street connects the Brickfields and Kazerne with the Milling Precinct, home to the old Premier Milling complex on Quinn Street. And to the south of the square is the historic Electric and Workers Precinct containing the Workers Compound, Turbine Hall, the Electric Workshop, Sci Bono centre and the South African Breweries Museum.
We also visit the Transport Precinct incorporating the South African Reserve Bank, the Bus Factory, Transport House and the City of Johannesburg’s Directorate of Arts, Culture and Heritage.
After a thrilling ride and a few stops, we return back over The Nelson Mandela Bridge to Milner Park Hotel for a Pub Lunch, ending off our Jozie experience and leaving you with memories up and close, of one of Africa's biggest urban spaces.
