7 Days, Northern Desert Cycle – Namibia
This amazing trip starts in Windhoek. We traverse the lower slopes of Brandberg, cross to Twyfelfontein and discover Etosha National Park – the highlight of the tour.
• Cycle around the Brandberg, Namibia’s highest mountain
• Become immersed in rock carvings
• Walk and cycle amongst the beautiful animals of Etosha
• Enjoy the immense beauty of Namibia’s changing landscapes and endless skies.
Day 1 - Windhoek to Brandberg
Leaving the higher ground in Windhoek early in the morning, we approach the imposing Brandberg Mountain in Damaraland on our bicycles – a sight to behold – the highest mountain in Namibia! This is where the rare desert elephant roam and the meerkat rule!
Day 2 - Brandberg to Twyfelfontein
In the morning we hike and visit the famous Twyfelfontein (fountain of doubt), UNESCO World Heritage site which has been inhabited for over 6,000 years and has over 2,500 rock carvings and paintings. We drive to the Petrified Forest, with trees turned stone some 260 million years ago, before cycling through a rare live Mopane tree forest. Herero women in a traditional setting sell handmade articles and semi-precious stones. Our night under the stars is memorable and almost too vast and beautiful to grasp fully.
Day 3 - Etosha National Park
We transfer north to Etosha National Park, “the great white place of dry water”, which offers an amazing variety of wildlife. We spend one night in Etosha at either Okaukuejo or Halali (subject to animal movements), where a floodlit waterhole allows for 24-hour game viewing. Elephant and black rhinoceros are seen daily during the dry winter months and numerous other game species are also found here. The afternoon is a rest break before we settle in for the night’s game viewing with our specialist wildlife guide.
Day 4 - Okaukuejo – East Etosha, Namutoni region
A full day’s worth of game driving awaits, and we leave early to enjoy the cool morning air. We visit several waterholes and have splendid views of the massive Etosha Pan, a shallow depression that is dry for the greater part of the year, but fed by moisture from perennial springs on the fringes. The pan covers about 25 percent of the park. The game viewing is excellent throughout the year and we have the chance to spot a few new species that are not normally seen on the Okaukuejo side of the park. We stop at Halali camp for a rest and a leisurely lunch before continuing to the eastern side of the park and our luxury bush lodge, Onguma, home for the next two nights.
Day 5 – Onguma lodge - rest day
Onguma is a vast 35,000-hectare private game reserve that is a haven to large concentrations of wildlife. Sharing a common boundary with Etosha National Park, Onguma is considered one of the finest private game reserves in the region, enjoying global recognition for exceptional conservation, ground-breaking research and exciting safari experiences. Today you can choose from a number of optional activities, including game drives or simply relaxing and enjoying the ambiance and luxury at Onguma.
Day 6 - Private Etosha
This morning we join our specialist guides for a hiking 2 hours on foot viewing several stunning species of antelope, including rare black-faced impala. Our experienced guides share with you an intimate knowledge of the wildlife and the land that is part of their natural heritage. A picnic lunch is served on the trail. The afternoon is at your leisure with nature walks, time in the photographic hides to observe and capture memories that will last a lifetime, or lounging by the pool. Dinner is a special affair to celebrate the wonderful experiences which we’ve shared.
Day 7 - Etosha Departure to Windhoek
After a sumptuous breakfast we return to Windhoek. We’re back in Windhoek by noon and the tour ends on arrival.
